Computer not recognizing IPOD?

Ive had my ipod for quite some time. it still works great. My roomie recently stepped on my adapter/charger so i purchased a new one from apple. Except now my computer and my roomies computer wont recognize that my ipod is plugged in. Any suggestions on why this is happening? I want to reload my ipod and charge it.. PLEASE HELP!!!
